Service overview

Complete Smart Thermostat & Controls Services

We fit and look after smart thermostats, programmable thermostats, receivers, heating programmers and multi-zone controls throughout East Lothian. Before recommending a product, we check how the existing boiler receives a demand for heat, whether the property also needs hot-water control and where wireless components can communicate properly. We commonly find that the thermostat itself is suitable, but the receiver, wiring arrangement or hub position needs more thought.

Good controls let you heat the property around your actual routine rather than relying on one fixed temperature or an ageing mechanical timer. Call us if the heating starts at the wrong time, the thermostat loses connection, the boiler ignores temperature changes or you want control through an app. We also help owners of holiday and coastal homes monitor heating remotely between visits.

New controls work best with an efficient heat source, so we can pair them with a boiler replacement where the old boiler is near the end of its life.

What we cover

What Smart Thermostat & Controls Covers

  1. Smart thermostat installation

We install smart thermostats with compatible receivers, hubs and apps. We check the boiler interface and available control functions before choosing the connection method, rather than assuming every thermostat works with every system. Where the boiler supports it, we can also set up weather or load compensation so the system adjusts its output to demand.

  2. Wired and wireless room thermostats

We replace wired room thermostats and fit wireless models where new cabling would cause unnecessary disruption. In East Lothian properties with thick stone walls, we assess receiver range and hub position before fixing equipment permanently.

  3. Programmers and dual-channel controllers

We install heating programmers that manage timed heating periods and, where the setup allows, separate hot-water schedules. We label each function and set an initial programme with the customer.

  4. Smart radiator valves

We fit smart TRVs where room-by-room temperature control suits the property. We check valve compatibility, communication range and how each smart valve will work alongside the main thermostat.

  5. Multi-zone heating controls

We configure controls for separate heating zones, including thermostats, zone controllers and wiring centres. We test each zone independently to confirm that the correct valve and boiler demand respond.

  6. Receivers, relays and control modules

We replace faulty thermostat receivers, boiler control relays, gateways and hot-water control modules. We identify whether the fault sits with the control device, its power supply, pairing or connected wiring before replacing parts.

Before you decide

Common Heating Control Problems We Solve

  • My smart thermostat will not connect

We check power, pairing, Wi-Fi access, account settings and the signal path between the thermostat, receiver and hub. Thick stone walls can weaken wireless communication in East Lothian homes, so changing the equipment position may solve a recurring connection fault.

  • The thermostat is not controlling the boiler

A working display does not prove that the complete control circuit works. We test whether the thermostat sends a demand, whether the receiver switches and whether the boiler receives that command. This separates a pairing problem from a failed relay or wiring fault.

  • The heating comes on at the wrong times

We review schedules, manual overrides, frost settings, app routines and hot-water programmes. We commonly find overlapping time periods or an override that has remained active. We correct the settings and explain how to avoid the same issue.

  • I need to replace an old thermostat or programmer

We identify what the old control operates before removing it. Some programmers manage both heating and hot water, while others only switch one circuit. We recommend a replacement that preserves the functions the property needs without adding controls that serve no purpose.

How We Handle Your Smart Thermostat & Controls

  • 1. Discuss how you use the heating

We ask about occupancy, daily routines, remote access, room-by-room control and hot-water requirements. Owners of East Lothian holiday or coastal properties may prioritise remote monitoring, while a permanently occupied home may benefit more from straightforward schedules.

  • 2. Check the existing setup

We inspect the thermostat, programmer, receiver, boiler controls and relevant wiring. We also check wireless coverage and suitable equipment positions. This lets us confirm compatibility and plan the work before quoting.

  • 3. Fit and configure the controls

Your single point of contact manages the job, including any heating and electrical tasks required for the agreed installation. We mount the controls, connect receivers or relays, pair wireless devices and configure the app where applicable.

  • 4. Test and explain the system

We test heating demands, schedules, zones, overrides and hot-water commands included in the setup. We then show you how to change temperatures, adjust timings and use manual control if the internet connection becomes unavailable.

Common questions

Smart Thermostat & Controls Questions

You usually need a heating engineer rather than an electrician. We wire the thermostat receiver directly into the boiler control relay, which requires specific knowledge of boiler wiring diagrams. As Gas Safe Registered engineers, we are fully qualified to handle the electrical connections on your heating system safely.

We quote per job because the cost depends on your current setup and the system you choose. A straight swap of a programmable thermostat is relatively quick, while fitting a multi-zone heating control system with smart TRVs across a large property takes longer. We always provide a clear, fixed price before we start any work.

The main downside is their reliance on a stable internet connection for remote features. If your Wi-Fi drops, you cannot control the heating from your phone. However, the thermostat will still function manually as a standard wireless room thermostat, so you will never be left without heating.

It depends on your boiler. Most modern combi boilers accept smart controls easily. Older systems might need additional wiring or a specific dual-channel controller to manage both heating and stored hot water. We check your boiler compatibility during our initial visit.

No, the vast majority of smart thermostats we install do not require a subscription. Once you buy the equipment and pay for the installation, the app to control your heating is free to use.

Thick stone walls in traditional East Lothian properties can block the signal between the thermostat receiver and the hub. We usually recommend testing the signal strength in different rooms first. If the wireless signal struggles, we can install a wired room thermostat or use signal boosters to ensure reliable operation.

We work 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week across East Lothian. If you need a straightforward replacement for a broken heating programmer, we can often fit you in within a few days. More complex multi-zone setups require a bit more planning and a scheduled installation date.

Hive is a solid system, but the best alternative depends on your boiler. For example, if you have a Vaillant boiler, we often recommend Vaillant's own smart controls because they communicate directly with the boiler's internal logic, making the system run much more efficiently than a universal thermostat.
