Service overview

Complete Gas Leak Detection & Repair Services

We detect and repair leaks affecting natural gas and LPG installations across East Lothian. Our work includes tightness testing, checking for let-by at the emergency control valve, examining meter unions and tracing pipework with a gas detector. Once we locate the fault, we explain whether we can repair the affected joint or whether the damaged pipe needs replacing. We commonly divide the installation into sections during testing, which helps us narrow down a concealed leak without opening up more of the property than necessary.

Call us if you smell gas, hear hissing near the meter, notice the meter moving when every appliance is off or suspect damage to gas pipework. We also investigate carbon monoxide alarms where a gas appliance or its supply may be involved. Our working hours are 7am to 7pm, seven days a week. If there is an immediate smell of gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before arranging repair work.

A leak at the boiler needs a boiler repair, and an active escape is an emergency call-out.

What we cover

What Our Gas Leak Detection Work Covers

  1. Gas Tightness and Let-By Testing

We connect calibrated test equipment at the meter and check whether the installation holds pressure. We also test whether gas passes through the emergency control valve after isolation, as valve let-by can affect the test result.

  2. Leak Tracing With a Gas Detector

We use gas detection equipment alongside visual checks and sectional testing. This helps us examine accessible joints, valves, pipe routes and enclosed areas where a leak may not be obvious from smell alone.

  3. Meter Outlet and Union Checks

Leaks can develop at meter outlet fittings, unions and nearby pipe joints. We check these points carefully, isolate the supply and repair fittings that fall within the customer's installation.

  4. Gas Pipework Repair or Replacement

We repair leaking joints and replace damaged sections of pipe where appropriate. If old, inaccessible or deteriorated pipework cannot be repaired sensibly, we can plan a new route and complete a gas pipe re-run.

  5. Appliance Isolation and Make-Safe Work

When testing identifies a leak on an appliance connection, cooker hose or local isolation valve, we disconnect and cap the affected supply. We only reconnect equipment after completing the required checks and confirming that it is safe to do so.

  6. LPG Supply-Line Leak Detection

Rural and off-grid properties in East Lothian often use LPG. We inspect accessible supply lines, regulators, isolation points and connections between the bulk-LPG installation and the property, while distinguishing customer pipework from equipment handled by the LPG supplier.

Before you decide

What to Do While You Wait for Help

  • I Can Smell Gas or Rotten Eggs

Open doors and windows if you can do so safely. Do not smoke, light a flame or operate electrical switches. Turn off the gas at the emergency control valve if you know where it is and can reach it safely, then leave the property and call 0800 111 999.

  • I Hear Hissing Near the Gas Meter

Do not try to tighten the meter fittings yourself. Keep away from the area, avoid electrical equipment and leave the property. After the emergency response has made the supply safe, we can test the customer's installation and repair faults on the relevant pipework.

  • The Meter Moves With Everything Switched Off

Check that all gas appliances have been turned off, but do not repeatedly test the installation yourself. If the meter continues moving or clicking, or your gas bill climbs without explanation, isolate the supply if safe and report the suspected leak. We can perform a formal tightness test and trace the source.

  • My Carbon Monoxide Alarm Is Sounding

Leave the property, get everyone into fresh air and seek medical help if anyone feels unwell. Do not use the suspected appliance again. We can investigate the gas installation, isolate affected equipment and explain what must happen before it can return to use.

How We Handle Your Gas Leak Detection & Repair

  • 1. Respond and Make Safe

We ask what you have noticed, whether anyone feels unwell and whether the emergency service has isolated the supply. On arrival, we confirm the immediate condition of the installation and isolate affected pipework or equipment where required.

  • 2. Test and Trace

We carry out gas tightness and let-by tests using calibrated equipment. If the installation fails, we inspect likely points and use sectional testing or a gas detector to narrow down the source. This method helps avoid unnecessary disturbance to floors, cupboards and finished surfaces.

  • 3. Explain and Repair

You deal with one point of contact throughout the job. We show you where we found the fault and explain the repair before proceeding. Depending on the result, we may remake a joint, replace a fitting, repair a cooker connection or install a new section of pipe.

  • 4. Retest, Purge and Relight

We test the complete installation again after the repair. Once it passes the required checks, we purge air from the pipework in a controlled manner and relight suitable appliances. We record any equipment left disconnected and explain what further action it needs.

Common questions

Gas Leak Detection & Repair Questions

We take suspected gas leaks seriously and assess availability when you call. Our working hours are 7am to 7pm, seven days a week. If you can smell gas now, leave the property and call 0800 111 999 first. We can arrange testing and repair after the immediate emergency response.

We quote per job because the cost depends on the testing required, the pipe route and whether we find an accessible joint or concealed damaged pipework. We explain the likely scope before repair work starts. We do not invent a fixed price without understanding the installation.

We use tightness tests, gas detection equipment and sectional isolation to narrow down the affected area. We commonly test separate branches before recommending access work. This approach can reduce unnecessary lifting or opening, although concealed pipework sometimes requires physical access for repair.

Yes. We investigate LPG leaks affecting customer supply pipework, isolation points and appliance connections. We also check the accessible route from a bulk-LPG supply towards the property. If the fault belongs to the tank or supplier's equipment, we make that distinction clear.

We can test the connection, isolate the cooker and replace an unsuitable or damaged hose where the appliance and installation allow it. We then complete the necessary leak checks. We leave the cooker disconnected if it has another safety defect requiring attention.

We usually recommend replacing the affected section. Where old pipework runs through inaccessible or unsuitable areas, a new pipe route may provide the practical solution. We explain the proposed route, access requirements and testing process before starting the replacement.

A pilot light can fail for several reasons, so we do not assume that a gas leak caused it. Stop repeatedly relighting the appliance if you smell gas or notice unusual combustion. We can isolate the equipment, check its connection and establish whether the issue involves the gas supply.

Yes. We attend properties across East Lothian, including homes connected to the natural gas network and rural properties using LPG. We adapt the testing process to the fuel type, meter or regulator arrangement and the accessible supply route.
