Service overview

Complete Central Heating Installation Services

We install complete wet central heating systems for existing homes, renovations, extensions and new properties across East Lothian. Our work can include a gas condensing boiler or air-source heat pump, heating pipework, circulation pumps, expansion vessels, filling loops, zone valves and system controls. We calculate the heating demand before selecting equipment. This avoids relying on the output of the old boiler or simply copying existing pipe sizes.

A new system should distribute heat evenly, respond properly to its controls and operate within the heat source manufacturer's requirements. We look at the whole property, including insulation, room sizes, occupancy, available plant space and hot-water demand. In larger rural homes and farmhouses, we often need to account for long pipe runs, separate wings and areas used at different times.

Call us when planning a whole-house heating upgrade, converting from another fuel or adding heating during major building work. We provide a supply-and-install service with one point of responsibility throughout the job.

A new system is built around the right heat source, so we also fit boilers and renew supply and heating pipework where needed.

What we cover

What Central Heating Installation Covers

  1. Full Central Heating Systems

We design and install the complete system, including the heat source, distribution pipework, pumps, valves and controls. We plan each component as part of one hydraulic system rather than selecting items separately.

  2. Gas Condensing Boiler Systems

We install modern gas condensing boilers where the property, fuel supply and current regulations make gas heating suitable. Correct sizing matters because an oversized boiler can cycle frequently instead of running efficiently at a lower output.

  3. Air-Source Heat Pump Heating

We plan low-temperature wet heating around the output and flow temperature of the heat pump. For rural and off-grid properties in East Lothian, we assess outdoor unit positioning, electrical requirements and the building's heat loss before specifying equipment.

  4. System or Heat-Only Boiler Arrangements

We install system and heat-only boilers with a separate hot-water cylinder where the household needs stored hot water. We size the boiler, cylinder and controls together so the system can manage heating and hot-water demand.

  5. Heating Pipework and Circuit Design

We design flow and return routes that can carry the required volume of water without excessive resistance or noise. The layout may include separate circuits where extensions, upper floors or distant rooms place different demands on the system.

  6. Zoned and Larger Heating Systems

We use zone valves, circulation pumps and suitable controls to divide a property into manageable heating areas. Large farmhouses may also require a low-loss header or buffer vessel to maintain stable flow across several circuits.

Before you decide

Common Heating Problems We Solve

  • "I need to know what a new system will cost"

We quote each installation after assessing the property because the heat source alone does not determine the cost. Floor area, heat loss, pipe routes, electrical work, zoning, access and hot-water requirements all affect the specification. Our quote sets out the proposed work rather than relying on a generic package price.

  • "The whole house needs a heating upgrade"

We assess the building as one system and identify what the new installation must deliver in every area. We commonly find that older layouts have grown through piecemeal alterations. A planned replacement lets us establish suitable circuits, flow rates, controls and plant capacity from the outset.

  • "We are adding an extension or converting rooms"

New rooms can change the heating load and expose the limits of an existing system. We calculate the additional demand, check the available capacity and plan how the new zone will operate. This prevents the extension from taking heat away from the rest of the property.

  • "Our rural property needs a different heating approach"

Not every East Lothian property has a mains gas connection or a compact pipework layout. We assess fuel availability, outdoor space, electrical capacity and the distance between plant and heated areas. For large rural homes, we may divide the installation into zones so unused areas do not need the same heating schedule.

Customer reviews

Trusted in East Lothian. Their Words.

  • The heating was coming on when the boiler was on, so we had to choose between no hot water or the house being like a sauna! Luckily Haggart Plumbers identified the problem, i.e. the motorised valve on the boiler needed replacing…

How We Handle Your Central Heating Installation

  • 1. Survey and Consultation

We visit the property to discuss how you use the rooms, how much hot water you need and what you want from the new system. We inspect potential pipe routes, plant locations, fuel supplies and access. You have a single point of contact for the proposed installation.

  • 2. Heat-Loss Assessment and Design

We assess room sizes, building fabric and likely heat loss before choosing the heat source and system temperatures. We then plan the pipework, circuits, zoning and main components. For an air-source heat pump, this stage also covers outdoor unit siting and low-temperature operation.

  • 3. Clear Specification and Quote

We provide a job-specific proposal showing the equipment and installation work included. Where building, electrical or joinery work forms part of the project, we coordinate the sequence under one contractor. We also explain any decisions the customer needs to make before work begins.

  • 4. Installation and Commissioning

We install the agreed system, fit a magnetic system filter, fill the circuits with inhibitor and water treatment, test them, set the controls and commission the heat source. We check operating temperatures, pressure, flow and zone response rather than leaving the system at factory settings. Before finishing, we explain how to use the heating and provide the relevant documentation.

Common questions

Central Heating Installation Questions

We quote per job because every property is different. The cost depends on the size of the house, the type of heat source, and how much new pipework is required. A full installation in a standard three-bedroom home will cost significantly less than a complex system for a large rural farmhouse.

For an average East Lothian property, a complete installation takes between five and ten days. We can give you an exact timeline once we survey the property and determine how much flooring needs to be lifted to route the new pipework.

Grant funding changes frequently and depends on your specific circumstances, such as your income and property energy rating. We advise checking the latest Home Energy Scotland schemes, though we focus purely on the private installation side of the work.

Yes, we usually recommend replacing a boiler of that age. Modern gas condensing boilers are significantly more efficient. An old unit will be costing you more in gas and is far more likely to suffer a major breakdown during the winter.

Combi boilers are not being banned outright for existing homes, but building regulations are pushing new builds towards low-carbon alternatives like air-source heat pumps. For most existing East Lothian properties on the gas grid, fitting a highly efficient replacement gas boiler remains a perfectly legal and practical option.

Yes, we design systems for off-grid homes. In these cases, we often specify an air-source heat pump or an LPG boiler, paired with a suitable hot water cylinder, to ensure you get the same performance as a mains gas property.
