Complete Gas Leak Detection & Repair Services
We investigate suspected gas escapes in homes, flats, rented properties and commercial premises across Edinburgh. Our engineers check the emergency control valve, meter outlet, unions, accessible pipework and appliance connections before carrying out a gas tightness test. We commonly use a manometer to identify a pressure drop, then divide the installation into sections and use a gas detector or approved leak detection fluid to pinpoint the fault. We never test with a naked flame.
Call if you smell gas, hear hissing near the meter, notice the meter moving when every appliance is off or have a carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Open windows and doors, avoid flames and electrical switches, and turn off the supply at the emergency control valve if you can do so safely. Leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Once the immediate risk has been dealt with, we can locate the defect, repair or replace the affected section and test the installation before use.
A leak at the boiler needs a boiler repair, and an active escape is an emergency call-out.

What Gas Leak Detection & Repair Covers
-
Gas tightness and let-by testing
We use calibrated test equipment at the meter to check whether gas pressure falls within the installation. We also check whether the emergency control valve allows gas to pass when closed, known as let-by.
-
Leak tracing with a gas detector
We trace suspected escapes along accessible pipe routes, joints and appliance connections. A detector helps narrow down the location, while sectional testing confirms which part of the installation needs attention.
-
Meter outlet and union checks
We inspect the meter outlet, unions and nearby fittings for leakage. These joints can require careful testing because a small escape may create a noticeable smell in a cupboard or enclosed meter space.
-
Gas pipework repair or replacement
We repair damaged joints and replace defective pipe sections where access permits. If the existing route cannot be repaired safely, we can plan a pipe re-run and test the new section before connection.
-
Appliance and cooker connection repairs
We check appliance isolation valves, cooker hoses and connectors for leaks or damage. We isolate the affected appliance before replacing an approved connection and testing it under operating conditions.
-
Make-safe, purge and relight work
We disconnect or cap unsafe sections when an immediate repair is not possible. After completed repairs, we retest the installation, purge air from the pipework and relight suitable appliances in line with Gas Safe procedures.

What to Do While You Wait for Gas Leak Help
-
I can smell gas
Open doors and windows, extinguish naked flames and avoid operating electrical switches, plugs or doorbells. Turn off the gas at the emergency control valve if it is safe and accessible. Leave the property and call 0800 111 999. We can investigate and repair the installation after it has been made safe.
-
There is hissing near the gas meter
Do not try to tighten the meter unions or investigate with a flame. Move away from the area, ventilate the property without using electrical equipment and follow the emergency gas procedure. We check the valve, meter outlet and customer-owned pipework to establish where responsibility for the leak sits.
-
The meter moves when everything is off
Check that every gas appliance and pilot light is off, but do not dismantle anything. Movement, meter clicking or an unexplained high gas bill may indicate gas use, an appliance fault or a leak. We use tightness testing rather than relying on the meter alone, then isolate sections to find the cause.
-
My carbon monoxide alarm is sounding
Move everyone into fresh air, leave the property and seek medical advice if anybody feels unwell. Do not reset the alarm and continue using gas appliances. We investigate possible combustion and flue concerns only after the immediate danger has been addressed, isolating suspect equipment where required.

Bill Hunter, EdinburghThe service from the first phone call to Joe leaving our house was professional, friendly. We would have no hesitation in recommending Haggart to anyone.

Isabella Lazzarini, EdinburghWe called Haggart four years ago to completely renovate our bathroom, and they did a brilliant job: this summer we had a couple of emergencies in the kitchen and called them again…

Hazel Musson, EdinburghQuick and efficient. Arrived promptly at 8.15, and completed the work (replacing 6 radiators) by late morning. They tidied up thoroughly, leaving no sign of their presence other, obviously, than the new radiators.
How We Handle Your Gas Leak Detection & Repair
-
1. Respond and make safe
When you call between 7am and 7pm, any day of the week, we ask what you can smell or hear, where the meter sits and whether the supply has been isolated. If there is an active suspected escape, we tell you to leave and contact the National Gas Emergency Service first.
-
2. Test the installation
Our Gas Safe engineer checks the emergency control valve and carries out a tightness test at the meter. We inspect accessible unions, valves, pipework and appliance connections, then isolate parts of the system where necessary to narrow down the leak.
-
3. Explain and repair the fault
You deal with one point of contact throughout the work. We explain what has failed, what must remain isolated and whether we can repair the defect immediately. Repairs may include remaking a joint, changing a connector, replacing pipework or capping an unsafe section.
-
4. Retest and restore the supply
We repeat the tightness test after the repair. Where the installation passes and appliances remain safe to use, we purge the pipework and relight them as appropriate. We explain what we completed and identify any separate work still required.
Gas Leak Detection & Repair Questions
-
Open doors and windows, avoid naked flames and do not operate electrical switches. Turn off the gas at the emergency control valve if it is safe to reach, leave the property and call 0800 111 999. We can assess and repair customer-owned pipework once the immediate situation is safe.
-
No. Do not use a flame or attempt to tighten gas fittings. A meter reading alone cannot confirm where gas is escaping. We use calibrated equipment, tightness testing and approved detection methods to find leaks without creating another risk.
-
A smell outside or in a communal space may come from gas infrastructure rather than your property. Move away and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. We investigate pipework within the property after the network emergency team has addressed any external concern.
-
We quote per job because the cost depends on access, tracing time, pipe condition and the repair required. A loose accessible joint differs from concealed pipework that needs rerouted. We explain the likely work and obtain approval before carrying out additional repairs.
-
Haggart Plumbers answers calls from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week. Attendance depends on engineer availability and location in Edinburgh. For an active smell of gas, do not wait for a plumbing appointment. Leave the property and call 0800 111 999 immediately.
-
We commonly start at the flat's meter and establish whether the pressure loss lies within that individual installation. Shared and communal gas risers require careful identification because making one section safe may affect neighbours. We explain any access or coordination needed before work begins.
-
We can sometimes isolate and disconnect the affected appliance while leaving the remaining installation operational, but only if testing confirms that it is safe. If we cannot isolate the defect securely, we make the full installation safe and explain what repair must happen before reconnection.
-
We carry out another tightness test to confirm that the repaired installation holds pressure correctly. We then purge and relight appropriate appliances where safe. We also explain which section failed, what we replaced and whether any disconnected equipment needs separate attention.
