Service overview

Complete Boiler Replacement Services

We replace boilers that have become inefficient, unreliable or uneconomical to keep running. Before specifying a replacement, we inspect the existing boiler, pipework, radiators, controls, flue route and hot water arrangement. We commonly find that an old boiler has been sized around outdated assumptions, so we calculate the current heat loss rather than simply copying the output shown on its data plate. We then recommend a suitable boiler and explain any supporting work.

A replacement becomes worth considering when breakdowns grow more frequent, parts become difficult to source or energy use remains high despite sensible controls. A new A-rated condensing boiler, rated under the ErP energy-efficiency scheme, can also work more effectively with modern controls, thermostatic radiator valves and a magnetic system filter. We handle the replacement through one point of contact, including the plumbing, heating work and coordination of associated trades.

A replacement is often the moment to upgrade the wider system, so we also handle central heating installation and hot water cylinder work.

What we cover

What Boiler Replacement Covers

  1. Old boiler to combi conversion

We convert suitable systems from a conventional boiler, hot water cylinder and storage tanks to a combination boiler. We check mains water flow and pressure first because these directly affect hot water performance, especially where more than one outlet may run at once.

  2. Like-for-like boiler swap

A like-for-like swap retains the existing heating arrangement while replacing the boiler and, where required, the flue and controls. We still check boiler sizing, system condition and pipework rather than assuming the old specification remains suitable.

  3. Back boiler removal and replacement

We remove obsolete back boilers located behind fires and replace them with a modern boiler in a practical position. In Edinburgh period properties, we plan access, pipe routes, fireplace work and ventilation carefully before starting.

  4. Boiler relocation during replacement

A replacement creates an opportunity to move a poorly positioned boiler. We assess gas pipe sizing, condensate drainage, flue clearances and access for future maintenance before agreeing a new position with the customer.

  5. Fuel and heating-system conversion

We assess conversions from oil or LPG where another heating arrangement may suit the property better. This requires a proper comparison of heat demand, available services, emitter sizes and the practical work involved, rather than choosing equipment from headline output alone.

  6. Boiler, controls and system upgrade

We can combine the replacement with new controls, thermostatic radiator valves and a magnetic filter. We commonly recommend cleaning and protecting older systems so debris from existing pipework and radiators does not circulate through the new boiler.

Before you decide

Common Boiler Problems We Solve

  • Should I repair or replace my boiler?

We look at the boiler's age, condition, fault history, parts availability and likely repair cost. We also consider whether it still meets the property's heating and hot water needs. If a repair remains sensible, we say so. If continued spending offers poor value, we explain the replacement options.

  • How much will a new boiler cost?

We quote each replacement individually because access, boiler type, output, flue route, controls and required system work all affect the price. A simple swap differs considerably from a combi conversion or back boiler removal. Our quotation sets out the agreed scope so you can see what the job includes.

  • Why are my heating bills so high?

An old boiler may waste fuel, but boiler efficiency forms only part of the picture. We check control settings, radiator performance, system water condition and the building's heat demand. We then specify the replacement around how the Edinburgh property actually heats, not just the model being removed.

  • What if parts are no longer available?

Manufacturers eventually stop supplying key components for older boilers. We confirm the fault and investigate parts availability before recommending replacement. When a boiler has become beyond economical repair, we help plan a controlled change rather than waiting for another failure to leave the property without heating.

Customer reviews

Trusted in Edinburgh. Their Words.

  • The new kitchen mixer tap fitted to my sister's kitchen sink is excellent. It is much easier for her to use than the old one…

    Tony Rae, Edinburgh
  • We called Haggart four years ago to completely renovate our bathroom, and they did a brilliant job: this summer we had a couple of emergencies in the kitchen and called them again…

    Isabella Lazzarini, Edinburgh
  • Quick and efficient. Arrived promptly at 8.15, and completed the work (replacing 6 radiators) by late morning. They tidied up thoroughly, leaving no sign of their presence other, obviously, than the new radiators.

How We Handle Your Boiler Replacement

  • Initial consultation and site survey

Every successful project begins with a thorough home visit. We inspect your current setup, check your gas supply pipe sizing, and assess your water pressure. We discuss your heating habits and hot water demands to understand exactly what you need from your new system.

  • System design and transparent quoting

Based on our survey, we calculate the required kilowatt output for your property. We specify the correct boiler model and design the optimal flue route. You then receive a detailed, written quotation outlining the exact scope of work. You deal with a single point of contact who answers all your questions before any work begins.

  • Safe removal and installation

Our engineers arrive on time and protect your flooring and work surfaces. We safely drain your heating system, disconnect the gas supply, and remove the old boiler. We then fit your new unit, alter the pipework as required, and install necessary system protection like magnetic filters and scale reducers.

  • Testing, handover and certification

Once installed, we thoroughly flush the system and add chemical inhibitor to protect against future corrosion. We commission the boiler, testing gas pressures and flue emissions to guarantee safe operation. Finally, we show you how to use your new controls, register the warranty on your behalf, and issue your building compliance certificate.

Common questions

Boiler Replacement Questions

There is no single figure, because the appliance you choose, the condition of the existing pipework, the flue route and any system preparation all change the job. A straight swap in the same position costs less than a move to a different wall. We survey the property, then give you a competitive fixed price covering parts and labour, so the scope is agreed before we start.

Age on its own does not decide it. We look at whether parts are still available, how the appliance is running under load, what it has already cost you in repairs and the condition of the rest of the system. We tell you what we find and leave the decision with you. Where a repair is still sensible, we say so.

Scottish Government schemes do exist, and the eligibility rules and funding change from time to time. We are a heating firm rather than a grant administrator, so we will not tell you whether you qualify. Check the current criteria with Home Energy Scotland, then talk to us about the work itself. We can supply the quote and the specification you may need.

We disconnect and remove it, make the gas and water connections safe, and take it away when we leave. We also check the condition of the pipework and controls we are connecting to, because fitting a new appliance to a system in poor condition shortens its life.

Yes. Haggart Plumbers is Gas Safe Registered, No. 936063, and we notify the installation and hand you the paperwork. We are a Vaillant Advanced Installer, so a qualifying Vaillant appliance can be registered for its extended seven-year warranty at the same time.
