Complete Boiler Repair Services
We diagnose and repair boiler breakdowns across Edinburgh, covering faults in the controls, ignition system, water circuit and combustion components. Our first task involves confirming the reported symptom and testing the boiler under operating conditions. We commonly find that the displayed fault code identifies the affected system but not the actual failed part. We test the relevant components before recommending a repair rather than replacing parts based on the code alone.
Call us when the boiler locks out, leaks, loses pressure repeatedly, makes unusual noises or fails to fire. We also investigate intermittent faults, including hot water that changes temperature or a boiler that stops and restarts without completing a heating cycle, as well as lockouts caused by a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather. Do not remove the boiler casing or keep resetting a persistent fault. Our engineers work on gas boilers in line with current safety requirements. We explain the fault, the proposed work and any parts required before proceeding.
If the fault turns out to sit in the wider system, we also carry out central heating repairs and radiator repairs.

What Our Boiler Repairs Cover
-
Fault-Code Diagnosis and Lockouts
We read the displayed error code, check the manufacturer's fault sequence and test the related components. If the boiler has locked out, we identify why before resetting it and checking that it runs correctly.
-
Printed Circuit Board Faults
The printed circuit board controls several boiler functions, so a PCB fault can resemble a sensor, fan or ignition problem. We test incoming signals and connected components before deciding whether the board requires repair or replacement.
-
Heat Exchanger Problems
We inspect main and plate heat exchangers for restricted flow, internal leakage and heat-transfer problems. Banging or kettling noises often point to sludge or scale building up in the exchanger, which we flush or treat. Temperature readings and operating behaviour help us distinguish an exchanger fault from a pump, valve or sensor issue.
-
Diverter and Gas Valve Faults
A sticking diverter valve can interrupt the change between heating and hot water demand. Gas valve testing requires a Gas Safe engineer, and we complete the necessary combustion and safety checks after any work.
-
Circulation Pump Repairs
We check whether the pump receives power, starts correctly and moves water through the boiler. A seized or failing pump may cause overheating, noise or rapid shutdown, but system restrictions can produce similar symptoms.
-
Ignition, Flame and Fan Faults
We test ignition electrodes, flame sensors and combustion fans as part of the firing sequence. We also check wiring, air-pressure components and flue-related readings before fitting a replacement part.

Boiler Repair Problems We Solve
-
The appliance locks out and will not restart
We read the displayed code, follow the manufacturer's fault sequence and test the components it implicates. We commonly find that a code names the circuit rather than the failed part, so we test before we replace. Resetting a locked-out appliance again and again can conceal the fault that caused it.
-
The hot tap runs warm and then cools
We check the diverter valve, the flow sensor and the plate heat exchanger before anyone concludes that the unit itself is finished. In our experience a swing in temperature at the tap points to one component. We confirm which under operating conditions rather than from the description alone.
-
System pressure falls and needs topping up
We look for a weeping joint on the circuit, a failed expansion vessel, or a pressure relief valve that is passing to the outside. Topping the system up again only treats the symptom, so we trace the loss, put it right and re-pressurise the boiler correctly. In an Edinburgh tenement we also check the flats above and below, because the water may be leaving the system somewhere other than the room the appliance is in.
-
The fault returns a few weeks after a repair
We trace a repeat fault to its cause rather than fitting the same part twice. That can mean testing the system water, the circulation and the controls as well as the appliance. Where another repair is no longer the sensible option we say so, explain what we found and leave the decision with you. Contact us for a quote once we have seen it.

How We Handle Your Boiler Repair
-
Immediate Response and Safety Check
When you call our Edinburgh office on 0131 447 2656, you speak to a single point of contact who takes your details and books an appointment. Upon arrival, we isolate the power and gas supply to make the area safe before opening the boiler casing.
-
Fault Diagnosis and Testing
We do not guess. We use multimeters and gas pressure gauges to test individual components, from the combustion fan to the printed circuit board. This isolates the exact failure and prevents unnecessary part replacements.
-
Clear Pricing and Repair
Once we identify the fault, we explain the issue and quote for the repair. We carry common spares for immediate fixes. If we need a specific part, we order it directly from our supplier network to minimise your wait time.
-
System Testing and Handover
After fitting the new part, we fire up the boiler and test it under full load. We check the gas combustion readings, ensure your radiators heat up evenly, and confirm the system operates safely before we leave your property.
Boiler Repair Questions
-
We offer appointments between 7am and 7pm, seven days a week. Same-day attendance may be available depending on the time of your call, engineer availability and whether the repair requires a specific part. Call 0131 447 2656 and describe the symptoms.
-
We quote each repair by the job because cost depends on diagnostic time, access, labour and replacement parts. A sensor fault differs considerably from a PCB or heat exchanger problem. We explain the proposed repair and provide a quote before additional work begins.
-
No. Work on a gas boiler must stay within the engineer's competence and Gas Safe registration. Haggart Plumbers is Gas Safe Registered, No. 936063. We recommend checking registration before allowing anyone to remove the boiler casing or work on gas components.
-
Yes. We regularly work in tenement flats and account for stairs, shared access, compact kitchens and boilers fitted inside cupboards. Please tell us about parking restrictions, entry systems or limited access when booking so we can prepare for the visit.
-
We see several recurring causes rather than one universal fault. These include low pressure, ignition failures, circulation problems, sticking valves and faulty sensors. We test the operating sequence because the same symptom can result from different failed components.
-
A fault code identifies the system or stage where the boiler detected a problem. It does not always identify the failed part. We use the code as a diagnostic starting point, then test the relevant components, wiring and operating conditions.
-
No. We advise trying one user reset only if the manufacturer's instructions allow it. Repeated lockouts indicate an unresolved fault. Note the error code, leave the boiler off and arrange an inspection rather than continuing to reset it.
-
We carry commonly used parts and testing equipment, but boilers use model-specific components. We confirm the exact boiler details and failed part before fitting anything. If we need to order a component, we explain the next step and arrange the return visit.
